Beauty Check - Part 9 New makeup trends that aren't exactly new!

It so happened, that yesterday I was having my dinner and my father had put on some music channel on the TV that was showing some old bollywood (Indian hindi movies) songs of 60s and 70s and some older even than this, and suddenly I realized I am concentrating on the makeup of the heroines, rather than the songs or my food. ;) And guess what I saw, all the recent and prevalent makeup trends were portrayed by all these beautiful actresses of yesteryears of Indian cinema. So I decided to post about it in my series of Beauty Check. I am going through only some of my finds,

Coral lips/Bright orange/Neons lips are so in this season. But can you remember Meena Kumari from Pakeezah (1972) with her orangish lips?

or Sharmila Tagore from Kashmir Ki Kali (1964)?

Speaking of Sharmila, if you thought nude lips is all about Kim Kadarshian, think again! Here is one diva who did all of the bold winged liners, nude lips, androgynous brows, in the movie An Evening In Paris (1967).

Vibrant eye makeups? Yes we have it too! Remember Helen and Bindu?

And who can rock the sexy red pout better than the ever gorgeous Rekha?

Well this post turned out to be an ode to bollywood divas ;), who rocked these trends many years ago through their beautiful movies. The trends are not new, but they keep coming back you see. Who knows 50 years from now you would again see these trends rocking the beauty and fashion world!

Sunday Peek: The Indian Beauty Blog

Another Sunday, time for another Sunday Peek! :D I am loving this series as I get to know about many new Indian bloggers and see this community of Indian beauty blog grow day by day. I hope you all like it too :)
Time to welcome the newbie blogger, who I guess is already much known to some of you, and she is none other than Ritu from The Indian Beauty Blog . :)

Let's take a peek at what her blog is all about?

"
Women are beautiful, and they always will be! But there is a certain fixed mindset in India regarding skin tone. Girls with dusky/ dark skin tone are frequently looked down upon..

This blog has been created, specially keeping in mind, the day-to-day problems a dusky Indian girl faces in her life in relation to make-up. I have generally observed (and also suffered) the fact that most Indian cosmetic companies make cosmetics keeping in mind the fairer skin tones. It is so so difficult to find a foundation at times! I would love to share my experiences in this regard, and I hope this information will be of much use to many girls out there.

About me: I am a typical Delhiite girl, a Doctor by profession, and now into research. my passion for beauty and make-up started long back, when i was in school. As a young girl, I used to love using mom's cosmetics. With the passage of time, the interest only increased, and here I am, a beauty and make-up Blogger, and I'm totally loving this new-found love in my life to the core! Hope to see you guys at my Blog too! Stay gorgeous!!

P.S. The blog/ blog owner does not wish to discriminate on the basis of skin colour! "

Dr.Ritu has a number of beauty secrets up her sleeves, don't forget to check her DIYs on her blog The Indian Beauty Blog. Encouragement drives one to work better, so please share some love on her blog. :)

Vedic Line+ Exfo 10 Avocado Face Scrub Review

Writing this review reminds me that I have a backlog on so many posts, which I have planned to write so many days ago. Anyhoo, today I am going to review the Vedic Line+ Exfo 10 Avocado Face Scrub which I have got around some two months ago, and it was lying unused, but finally I tried and tested it and here is my view on it.

PRICE:  Rs.175

QUANTITY: 75 ml

INGREDIENTS:

MY EXPERIENCE: Vedic Line+ Exfo 10 Avocado Face Scrub comes in pink tube packaging and that is the cutest part of it. The scrub has a creamy base, and I find the scrub granules, though big in size and hard, doesn't effectively scrub my skin. I really don't get any scrubbed glow after using this. But, yes if you have very sensitive skin, the creamy base makes it a gentle scrub and you can use it, make sure that you don't rub the scrub hard.

It has kinda sweet wheatgerm/avocado smell to it. I have used it as a body scrub too, and it was again so gentle. What miffed me, that I tried this some two days ago, and after that I have got three zits on my face (ah it pains like hell :( ). Now I won't say this is the sole culprit, since I am changing my skin care products, but I really don't know!

WHAT I LIKED:
  • Has a creamy base, which makes the scrubbing really gentle.
  • Since it is so creamy, my dry skin doesn't feel any stretchiness.
  • Comes in a pink tube packaging which is hygienic.
  • Those who don't like parabens in their product, would be happy as this is paraben free.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:
  • I don't see any visible after effect of this whatsoever.
  • I got a few breakouts the last time I used it, so I am not sure whether I would be using this again.

VERDICT: I am not completely impressed with the effect of the scrub, or rather the lack of it. If have very dry and sensitive skin, and want a very gentle scrub, then you can give this a try.

Dove Damage Therapy Hair Fall Rescue Shampoo Review

Hey ya ladies! Do you know what exact hair problems you have and what are their solutions? Dove has come with an app called Dove Hair Aware, that rectifies your hair problem through a small survey and provides the best solution. I was interested to try out this app, and it showed that the solution for my hair problems is the Dove Damage Therapy Hair Fall Rescue range. I do have a little bit hairfall problem, and I get a few strands everytime I run my fingers through my hair, and it worsens in the monsoons. So I was glad to get to try this in this season. Let's see how much it stood up to it's claims.

PRICE:  Rs.125

QUANTITY: 200ml

INGREDIENTS:

WHAT IT CLAIMS:
" Leaves Hair Strengthened and Resistant to Hair Fall and Breakage. It is enhanced with Micro Moisture Serum that strengthens hair to dramatically reduce hair fall from 100 strands per day to just 2"

MY EXPERIENCE:
I have been using the Dove Damage Therapy Hair Fall Rescue Shampoo for last 3 weeks (considering the fact I shampoo my hair everyday). The shampoo comes in a flip top cap packaging. The consistency is medium thick, that spreads and lathers easily. It has got the trademark smell of the Dove shampoos which is really nice. The shampoo has some kind of  moisturising properties, and hair feels smooth to touch even when I am rinsing out the shampoo.

Coming to the results, I didn't notice any *visible* reduction in my hairfall problem, but my hair does look thicker now. However, it makes my hair appear flat as if I have applied oil or something, which I obviously haven't. It makes hair soft but it doesn't provide much shine which I get from other shampoos, hence it loses some points here.

WHAT I LIKED:
  • Provides moisture to hair making it soft to touch.
  • My hair appears more thick and voluminous and I can feel the thickness when I do a pony tail ;). But I think it might be due to the conditioning properties it has.
  • Love the smell.
  • Comes in flip top cap packaging, and it's sturdy and travel friendly.
  • Priced economically for the quantity.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:
  • My hair lacks shine and appears flat with this shampoo.
  • I didn't see any noticeable reduction in hairfall. It wasn't exactly 100 before but neither has it come down to 2.

VERDICT: Depending on various hair types, avg. hairfall of 100 is considered to be okay, so the claim of coming down to 2 doesn't withstand logically (and I am not accusing Dove for this, as most of the other brands also put such tall claims for hairfall problems). In case you are interested, I found this article which is worth a read to know how much hairfall is considered okay.

It arrived in this compact box, completely safe. They charge a shipping fee of Rs.50 on orders below or equal to Rs.500 and Rs. 30 for orders from Rs.501 - Rs.1000, above that shipping is free.

Olay Age Protect Anti-Ageing Cream Review

Yes you read it correct. I have been using an anti-ageing cream and FYI, I would be turning 25 (eeekkksss!!!) in next 11 days...(errrrr....ya I guess you know now when my bithrday is, so I am kinda expecting all the Happy Birthdays from you guys, so DON'T FORGET ;) :P )

Now, the reason why I got this cream was because, last month suddenly, I saw my upper lip area going dry and flaky, and too much skin tightening around the mouth area, and this was recurring over a few days. My laugh lines were getting prominent and I was petrified. I needed an immediate solution and thought of trying out the Olay Age Protect Anti-Ageing Cream. After using this for about three weeks (and some more), here is my view on it.

PRICE: Rs. 235

QUANTITY: 40g

INGREDIENTS:
Water, PPG-15 Stearyl Ether, Glycerin, Cetyl Alcohol, Salicylic Acid, Stearyl Alcohol, Polyacrylamide, Dimethicone, C13-14 Isopaaffin, Steareth-21, Cyclopentasiloxane, Laureth-7, Fragrance, Dimethiconol, Steareth-2, Tocopheryl Acetate, Disodium EDTA, Benzyl Benzoate, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Hexyl Cinnamal, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Benzyl Salicylate, Propylene Glycol, Hydroxycitronellal, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Linalool, Limonene, Cinnamate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf juice *
*(Didn't have the outer carton. Got it from net.)

WHAT IT CLAIMS:
  • Lightens dark spots
  • Reduces wrinkles
  • Improves skin tone

MY EXPERIENCE: I don't know why, but I have seen many girls/ladies, of or around my age, have some serious hang-ups with products containing the anti-ageing ingredients (or the mere words) in it. As if it makes them sound older or something?! IMO it's very important to protect your skin against wrinkles and lines from an early age (20+), and if some product provides such benefits, why not use them, when we are blindly trusting products with SPF 30/50/90 to protect us from sun damages three layers deep inside our skin, etc.

Anyhoo, I got this one as I told you guys about the skin problem I was facing and also, because I needed a good face moisturiser basically. It has a medium consistency but rich texture, so only a little amount is enough to cover the whole face. Blends easily into skin and leaves a completely nourished and moisturised feeling on the skin for the whole day. It doesn't turn my face oily on application, but may feel a bit heavy in the humid weather. Sometimes I use it twice a day, i.e after bath and at nighttime before going to bed and when I am lazy I use it on my hands/arms too :P. So I have almost hit pan with it in three and a half weeks.

It has got a nice subtle smell, which is only noticeable when you try to smell it. After three weeks, I can honestly say, that yes it worked for me. It solved my dry/flaky skin problem on the upper lip area. My laugh lines around the mouth area are less visible now. It has lightened the acne spots to some extent, though they aren't invisible yet. But the thing I loved the most about this, it gives a nice radiance/healthy glow on the face with regular usage. It doesn't work miracles, but yes it fulfills the claims to a certain extent.

WHAT I LIKED:
  •  Completely nourishes and moisturises my dry skin without turning it oily.
  • Didn't irritate my skin or caused any breakouts as such.
  • Worked on my problems as per the claims to quite an extent.
  • Gives a nice radiance and glow to the face which I loved the most.
  • Priced decently for the quantity, being an anti-ageing product that too from Olay ;).

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:
  • Might feel a bit heavy on humid days.
  • Didn't eradicate all the spots, but then it claims only to lighten them.
  • Completely unrelated, but I got this product without any outer carton (bought online). I am not sure if it's sold without the outer box or not. Any idea?

VERDICT:
If you are dry skin, then your skin would love this, but it might feel heavier on oily skin. Don't expect it to work some miracle in a day, but over time, it really did work for me. I really liked it and would certainly come back to it, if I don't get anything better (being a beauty blogger I need to keep my options open right :P ).

Aren't they super-cute! All the items arrived safely. Each of the items were in separate poly-packs. The quality is quite decent for all the accessories, which I wasn't expecting at that price. All in all I loved shopping from WholeSale-dress.Net and would love to recommend you all too.

Faces Canada Nail Enamel - Shade Persimmon(01) Review

Hey ya ladies! I am back with another nail polish review. I was looking for some neon orange and yellow shades. Faces Canada has been one of my favourite brands and I thought of trying out their nail polishes this time, and got the Persimmon shade for myself. Did it became my fave? Read on to know more.

    PRICE: Rs.99

    QUANTITY: 7ml

    SWATCH / NOTD:

You can also check two more NOTDs with this polish, here and here

MY EXPERIENCE: First thing that caught my attention, was the shade. It reminds me of the color of the pulp of a ripe mango. Not that I am a big fan of mangoes, but the color is so beautiful. It is a neonish, bright orangish shade, the kind that makes mothers go "eew! what kind of shade is that" :P. The consistency is medium thick and would have spread nicely, had the brush was better at applying. The brush is pathetic (sorry forgot to take a pic of it) and almost like a "jhaaru (sweeper's brush :P)". It makes application streaky and putting a second coat turns horrific. It takes around 15 mins to dry up, and starts chipping in two days on my nails but that might be due to uneven application. What I have seen from other swatches, the 40+ available shades are a mix of different finishes and quality. So, my views are specific for this shade only.

    WHAT I LIKED:
    • The shade is a bright orange shade which I like.
    • No OTT smell.
    • It is Toluene & DBP free.
    • 40+ shades to choose from.
    • Dries up decently fast.
    • Pretty affordable.
    WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:
    • The brush with this shade is pathetic. I hope they get consistent with the packaging and brushes, as I have heard good reviews for some shades and not so good reviews for some other shades.
    • Availability might be a problem, though you can buy it easily online.
    VERDICT:
I really liked the shade. But because of the brush, I am not willing daring to try out the other shades. Hope I have a better luck if I get one next time.

    RATINGS: 3.25 out of 5

D-Eva went to meet the Playboy in the Yardley on a Fogg-y night - ( A collective review of some deodrants, can you guess the names? :P)

Don't sue me, the absurd title is the outcome of my feverish mind *poor me, sob sob* :P. Yes, I am suffering from cold and fever for last few days, and today, since I am feeling a bit better, thought of reviewing the 5 deodrants that I have been using for a while. There isn't too much to tell in details, so instead of posting individual reviews, I am doing a composite, short reviews of each of them.

So first up, is the Playboy Women Play It Sexy Deodorant. ;) As kinky as the name sounds, the fragrance is sexy too. Perfect to wear in the evening. If you like musky fragrances, then this can become one of your favourites. Staying power is commendable and I can smell it even after 5-6 hours of wear on me.

Only thing that miffed me, is the intense underlying alcohol smell (quite common with most of the deodrants) just upon application, though it recedes as it settles down. Priced at Rs.199.00  for 150 ml, this is definitely worth a try. RATINGS: 4 out of 5

On to the next, the Yardley London English Lavender Deodorant. I wanted to try out this fragrance, ever since I saw the ad by Katrina. This one has got a sweet lavender smell that makes you feel all sweet and girly kind.:P Perfect for morning wear. However, I can't trace it on me after 3 hours or so.

Although, the smell is sweet and light, but I warn you, not to overdo it (pssst...else the you might smell like HIT). Priced at Rs.160.00  for 150 ml, this is quite economical and would suit school/college going girls who love flowery smell. RATINGS: 3.75 out of 5

Next one is also from Yardley London. This one is their Lace Satin Deodorant for Women. I got this one as I was quite intrigued by the words, Satin and Lace in a deo. :D The smell is quite sharp, I actually can't relate it to anything as such, sometimes it reminds of some medicinal talcum powder, sometimes I find it too artificial.

In short, nothing lace-y or satin-y about it. Staying power is hardly 2-3 hours on me. Even this spray bottle is a bit dysfuntional and doesn't push/spray easily. It is priced at Rs.160.00  for 150 ml. You aren't actually missing much if you haven't tried it. RATINGS: 3 out of 5

Now comes my favourite of the lot. Eva Wild Spicy Muguet All Day Freshness Deo. I love, love, love this one. :D If you are like me who abhors citrusy fragrances and are not much into flowery fragrances either, then this wild, woody, spicy fragrance is for you. It isn't intense, and can be worn in daytime as well as in evening. And guess what, this one actually stays the whole day on me. I can even smell it on my clothes next day. It also claims to be alcohol free and thus scores more brownie points. ;)

I liked everything about this one and can't remember any negative points. And I actually re-bought this one coz I loved it so much. Priced at Rs.110.00  for 125 ml, this is easy on the pocket too. Would recommend this to all who love woody/musky fragrances. RATINGS: 4.75 out of 5

Now, the last but not the least is the Fogg Delicious Body Spray for Women. This is one of my recent buys (last week to be precise). Honestly, I always found the ads for the Fogg deodrants very funny, IDK why. :P When I got it, I found their, No Gas , Only Deo claim is quite true as the spray bottle itself weighed more compared to other deos, and one can feel the movement of the liquid inside the bottle if the bottle is turned upside down. There wasn't any gas/fizz when I sprayed it.

Coming to the smell, it is so intense and in-your-face kind of, which I can only co-relate with some artificial incense stick fragrance. I love and hate it at the same time. :P But my mom just adores this smell, and gets nostalgic as it reminds her about the *pujo during her childhood days* (I am talking about THE mega festival of Bengalis, Durga Puja.....pssst only 95 days left to this year's...exciiiittteeddd :D ) Apart from the strong/heady fragrance, this seemed okay otherwise. It stays on me for more than 5-6 hours. Available at a price of Rs.180 for 120 ml. RATINGS: 3.75 out of 5

Forgot to mention, none of the 5 deos gave me any kind of skin irritation, whether it contained alcohol or not. Hope you liked my reviews. Do let me know if you have tried any of these. :)
